From the Waiting Room

I have been sitting in a waiting room for 1.5 hours now and I’m really bored (and cold). But look what I found in magazines:

That old fart Karl Lagerfeld (sorry, just don’t like him because he condones fur) and goddess Beth Ditto. Total beauty and the beast composition. Beth being the beauty, obvs!

And Kanye West sandwiched between two really cool ladies – the incomparable Róisín Murphy, and his girlfriend Amber Rose. It would be quite dreamy if Kanye and Róisín were to collaborate on something in the future, don’t you think?

Eight for 2008

This was supposed to be ye olde Top Ten list, but I felt like 2008 was lacking in many ways, and that feeling applied to music, too. I couldn’t even think of ten albums that I really liked this year. My rules for making the charts were kind of strict: The album needed to have a 2008 release date. Which is why I beat my own rules and cheated a little – Lupe Fiasco and Brandi Carlile already topped my (unreleased) album charts last year, but since their albums were finally released in the UK this year, I included them again. And ranked them a tiny bit lower, just to be fair, you know ;) Still, this isn’t a real chart. Below you will simply find eight albums that I enjoyed listening to in 2008.

"You're Only As Good As Your Last Haircut"

These are not my words, but those of Fran Lebowitz. According to this quote, I’m not worth a whole lot for I am still in that terrible intermittent stage of growing out a short haircut with bangs. Samantha Ronson (pictured right), however, just got a whole lot better:

And while noone really needs my praise, there is one blogger who is so cutting edge that he manages to update his blog multiple times a day, even though he must have a gazillion other things to do. Sounds like sarcasm, but I really do admire this kind of dedication. Mr. Kanye West himself just knighted Samantha Ronson “fresh kid”. He also has five (!) pages of pictures. With the words of the Internet: WTF? Here’s another good one. I guess I’m finally starting to see it, but I still haven’t heard any of her stuff. Apparently she’s DJing at the Roxy in Los Angeles tonight, if you’re in the area.

MTV Video Music Awards 2008: The Pre-Rant

I know that in all likelihood I will be eating my words tomorrow, yet I can’t help but find myself mildly excited about tonight’s MTV Music Awards. It’s been announced that Britney Spears will be opening the show, which could be great or just average – and the same goes for Russell Brand hosting the show. He can be absolutely hilarious, but sometimes he simply isn’t. I haven’t figured out a pattern to his madness yet, but I do hope that he will thrive under censorship pressures. All major American award ceremonies have been pretty boring ever since the aftermath of “Nipplegate”, and I reckon if Russell can’t break the spell of utter boredom, then nobody can!

I’m also really looking forward to performances by the marvelous Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West, who featured Uh Huh Her’s “Not a Love Song”-video in his blog, and who also must have broken last year’s oath to never perform at an MTV Award Show ever again, after MTV decided to just give all of the awards to Justin Timberlake. I would have liked to phrase this differently, but I guess my JT-bashing might be getting a little old.

MTV’s modus operandi of nominating the same videos for every semi-appropriate category continues this year, which will vouch for the main part of the show being incredibly long and boring yet again. And then there’s another highlight – or rather, lowlight: Katy Perry covering Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”. Oh my fucking God.

I can’t believe that I prefer both the song and video of Russell Brand performing “We’ve Got To Do Something” as Aldous Snow from Infant Sorrow, written and recorded as a joke for the movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, to most of the videos being celebrated tomorrow night. I guess I’m really getting too old for this!

Video of the Year?

We all know how upset Kanye West was when he lost the award for best music video to Justice and Simian at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards. In case you don’t know: he crashed the stage and told the guys that it wasn’t a personal thing, he didn’t know who they were, but his video cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it, and he was jumping across canyons, therefore he should have won. Afterwards, the media was all over him for being a megalomaniac sore loser. I personally thought he was just taking the mick, giving the media just what they were always accusing him of. Either way, his appearance was one of the sparse highlights of that show, and he did have a point. After all, it was the first time I had heard of Justice and Simian, too – and I do still watch MTV.

Looks like Kanye and I have both cultivated our musical horizons since. While I have always loved Kanye’s works, both as a producer and a performer, it took me a while to “get” electronic music. After a long struggle, I can enjoy Justice, Simian (Mobile Disco), Daft Punk and all the other usual suspects as much as the next person. You have to leave it to Kanye, however, to take a relatively lame Daft Punk sample and twist it into the best song of the year. And back it up with a fantastic video too: Daft Punk robots, fabulous outfits, beautiful women, and Japanese iconography – and I love the way Kanye dances. He’s also the only person who can pull off those sunglasses. I’m not sure who the director is, but it does have some of Hype Williams’ signature shots. (ETA: It was indeed directed by Hype Williams. The beautiful lady in the vid is no stranger, either. It’s Cassie.) If this does not win the next EMAs, then MTV is even more out of it than I assumed.

Kanye Covers A-Ha, Beatles, Verve at Cologne Show

Kanye WestOk, now I’m really bummed that I didn’t go to Kanye West’s show at the Cologne Palladium on Monday night. I thought I’d be too tired, what with getting no sleep on Oscar Night and me not getting any younger and all, but from what I’ve heard it must have been a fantastic show with quite a few “indie kids” in the audience.

Local papers report that he offered cover versions of songs by Eurythmics (“Sweet Dreams”), The Beatles (“Eleanor Rigby”), The Verve (“Bittersweet Symphony”), and A-ha (“Take On Me”) – all big favourites of mine. Considering that I absolutely love both of his albums, I’m quite mad at myself for missing out on this show.

No word on whether he was wearing my favourite, the pink sweater, though ;)
