Mei Melançon

Tonight’sNext week’s episode of The L Word will include a cast addition whom I happen to be very excited about: Mei Melançon!

A couple of years ago, a friend dragged me along to see X-Men 3 and I won’t lie – I hated that film. I think I snoozed through most of it (don’t even remember Ellen Page being in it at all) and then awoke with a jolt because Psylocke appeared on the silver screen. While I’m a sucker for heroines or strong female characters in comic books, I never quite warmed to Psylocke because she always looked too much like a product of (predominantly male) erotic fantasies. In a nutshell, she was sexy rather than a true super hero. The movie version of Psylocke was everything I had always wanted her to be though: cool, tough and beautiful – sadly, she only had a really short stint on screen.

I was impressed enough to look up the actress who portrayed her on imdb.com upon my return home. I also remember being a little surprised by the terrible oversight of casting directors who up until then had only cast her in nondescript roles with colourful names such as, “Screaming Woman”, “Convenience Store Customer”, “Chinese Slavewhore” (horrible!), “Beautiful Patron” (improving), “Girl in Car” or “La Perla Model” (LOL).

When I was checking out trailers for season 6 of The L Word on YouTube, I stumbled across this one, and lo and behold, instant recognition: Mei Melançon is going to be on the show!

Mei Melançon

I have a sneaking suspicion that her character, Jamie Chen, might not be the most popular one due to possibly meddling with a beloved couple, but we’ll have to wait and see. I can’t wait!

Edited to add: According to imdb.com, Jamie Chen should have been introduced in the episode that aired last night, so I don’t know what happened.

And please stop sending me emails asking for verification regarding rumours about her dating life. How am I supposed to know?? I don’t know anything, I’ve only heard the same rumours that you have.

I will say this, though: I resent the fact that some of you sound so angry. I think Mei appears to be an intelligent, interesting, beautiful and down-to-earth woman, who would be a great match to the person she is rumoured to be with. They should both be considered lucky and I would be happy for them. And that is all I have got to say on this matter.
