We all know how upset Kanye West was when he lost the award for best music video to Justice and Simian at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards. In case you don’t know: he crashed the stage and told the guys that it wasn’t a personal thing, he didn’t know who they were, but his video cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it, and he was jumping across canyons, therefore he should have won. Afterwards, the media was all over him for being a megalomaniac sore loser. I personally thought he was just taking the mick, giving the media just what they were always accusing him of. Either way, his appearance was one of the sparse highlights of that show, and he did have a point. After all, it was the first time I had heard of Justice and Simian, too – and I do still watch MTV.
Looks like Kanye and I have both cultivated our musical horizons since. While I have always loved Kanye’s works, both as a producer and a performer, it took me a while to “get” electronic music. After a long struggle, I can enjoy Justice, Simian (Mobile Disco), Daft Punk and all the other usual suspects as much as the next person. You have to leave it to Kanye, however, to take a relatively lame Daft Punk sample and twist it into the best song of the year. And back it up with a fantastic video too: Daft Punk robots, fabulous outfits, beautiful women, and Japanese iconography – and I love the way Kanye dances. He’s also the only person who can pull off those sunglasses. I’m not sure who the director is, but it does have some of Hype Williams’ signature shots. (ETA: It was indeed directed by Hype Williams. The beautiful lady in the vid is no stranger, either. It’s Cassie.) If this does not win the next EMAs, then MTV is even more out of it than I assumed.
Here’s hoping that there will be no rude awakening for Kanye when this girl totally steals his show at the awards.

Ehm, weiter auf deutsch. So complex
Ich bin ja eigentlich sehr elektronische-Musik-Hörer. Simian Mobile Disco (die, wie ich vor kurzem erfahren durfte, aus der ‘normalen’, nicht-elektro Band Simian hervorgegangen sind) ist mir das erste Mal vor zwei Wochen begegnet. Und ich habe mich direkt ein wenig verliebt und das Album gekauft. Justice erst vor drei Tagen, als ich es im 3voor12.nl-Stream gehört habe. Sehr toll. Und erinnert eben an Daft Punk. Die französischen Elektro-Dance-Paten schlechthin, die ich schon seit mehreren Jahren toll finde (die aber leider in letzter Zeit viel zu wenig ‘Stoff’ produziert haben). Auf’s Daft-Punk-Konzert nach Düsseldorf fahre ich morgen.
Aber weiter im Coincidence-Kontext:
Kanye West ist eigentlich der einzige (englischsprachige) Hip-Hopper den ich gerne höre. Schreibt relativ tiefgründige Texte (im Gegensatz zu dem pimpolicious Einheitsbrei der sonst mit den Goldschiffen von Drüben kommt) und hat besonders immer tolle und knackige Rhythmen. Außerdem empfand ich ihn immer als etwas bodenständig. Naja, letzteres hat sich seit dem MTV-Auftritt geändert. Aber das macht nichts an seiner Musik. Die ist eigentlich immernoch toll.
Sein neues Lied mag sich mir aber noch nicht ganz wohlig durch die Gehörgänge treiben. Ich denke das liegt an dem ja objektiv wirklich ziemlich prägnanten Daft-Punk-Sample, das mir einfach subjektiv völlig in seinem Original ins Hirn gebrannt ist
. Mal abwarten, ob sich das nicht mit der Zeit weichklopfen lässt.

Also schonmal danke dafür!! Ich mochte einige der Simian-Remixe, aber manche auch gar nicht, deshalb war ich schon neugierig auf das Simian Mobile Disco-Album. Nach kurzem Reinhören habe ich es mir auch direkt gekauft und finde es super. Ähnlich war es mit dem Justice-Album – “Stress” finde ich richtig genial (das ist zufällig auch mein “Nike + iPod”-Motivationssong 
). Zu Daft Punk hatte ich über “Technologic” und den “Take Me Out”-Remix von Franz Ferdinand gefunden, aber das war halt erst sehr spät.
Dennoch hätte ich mir gerne das Konzert in Düsseldorf angesehen, denn die Show wird sicher fantastisch sein, aber ich war vorgestern schon bei Placebo in der Philipshalle, und davor auch noch auf ein paar Konzerten, ich muss mich also ein wenig beherrschen.
Ein anderer toller englischsprachiger Rapper, den ich dir hiermit wärmstens ans Herz legen möchte, ist Lupe Fiasco. “Food & Liquor” gehört zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsalben der letzten beiden Jahre – wunderbar poetische Texte über das Skaten (“Kick, Push”), den Materialismus des Genres (“The Emperor’s Clothes”), tolle Samples (“Daydreamin’”) und ein sehr schöner Song über Frauen mit dem Titel “Hurt Me Soul” in dem es heißt:
I used to hate hip-hop… yup, because the women degraded
But Too $hort made me laugh, like a hypocrite I played it
A hypocrite I stated, though I only recited half
Omittin the word “bitch,” cursin I wouldn’t say it
Bei ihm wird die Reflexion auch durch seinen Glauben geprägt, er ist Moslem und setzt sich u.a. in dem Song “American Terrorist” mit seiner Religion und Herkunft auseinander. Eine Zeile wie “the ink of a scholar is worth a thousand times more than the blood of a martyr” finde ich meistens schon beeindruckender als ein ganzes Album von Jay-Z
Außerdem scheint Lupe ein verdammt netter Typ zu sein, ich habe immer sehr gerne sein Blog bei HypeBeast gelesen, aber er hat leider im November letzten Jahres aufgehört.
