How These Days Grow Long

I think my commute is too long. Lately it’s been feeling like I spend more time looking at, looking out of, or waiting for trains than with the people I care about. And that makes me pretty melancholic.

MEN

JD Samson of MEN in Muelheim
JD Samson of MEN in Mülheim

First things first: If you haven’t heard of Brooklyn-based band MEN yet (hello, my lovely baby brother Stephan ;) ), then head on over to their MySpace and check them out right NOW! “Credit Card Babie$” is my current favourite song (actually, it’s already safe to say that it is one of my favourite songs ever), so I was extra-chuffed to see that they are touring Europe and were stopping by in Mülheim which is not too far away from where I live.

I missed their first European tour in 2007 because I had just been released from the hospital and so I was excited to get another chance. The line-up has changed slightly since then: Originally, it consisted of JD Samson and Johanna Fateman, “2/3 Le Tigre/Brooklyn” as the flyer for the Cologne gig that is still attached to my whiteboard states. Two thirds of Brooklyn? Really? How come rent is so unaffordable there, then? ;)

Anyway, Johanna Fateman had a really beautiful baby in March and, along with Emily Roysdon, is a contributor now. MEN have evolved from a DJ and production duo to a live act consisting of JD Samson, Michael O’Neill and Ginger Brooks Takahashi.

And woah! They rock! In an irresistibly dance-y way. They’re so much fun to listen and dance to, and really beautiful people to boot. And to top things off, their songs have actual messages! They are the perfect band!

Here’s the video to “Off Our Backs”, directed by K8 Hardy who also brought us the “Sisters in the Struggle” video by Lesbians on Ecstasy. I can’t remember if I ever blogged about that one. I certainly was going to, because I haven’t been able to look at trees the same way since!

And here are a couple of pictures I took. I still can’t work the DSLR – my shots of Michael are all really blurred which is a crying shame because I loved Michael! I want to have his credit card babies, LOL. And unfortunately I was standing too far away from Ginger so I couldn’t really capture her either. Thomas and I did get a chance to photograph the three of them after the show (thanks, Svenja!) but sadly my camera kept blocking so I couldn’t take that picture. Bummer. Well, all the more reason to hope for a “next time.” If you get the chance to see MEN, don’t hesitate and go for it! A guaranteed great time!

There’s also a picture of me with the band but I’m shy. You’ve got to be my Facebook friend if you want to see it. ;)

Japanese, Anyone? (Help Needed)

Daruma doll

I bought this really kawaii Daruma doll in Düsseldorf, but I’m confused about which eye to paint first. Also, some eBay seller suggested that women need to paint the other eye. The problem is that I found plenty of conflicting sources, so effectively, since I don’t trust Wikipedia on this one, I don’t really know which eye that would be.

I’m thinking that the bag accompanying my Daruma might give a hint because the illustrations appear to have different eyes painted first. The only trouble: I don’t know any Japanese. The doll represents something that is really important to me and I don’t want to mess this up, so if you understand Japanese and know what the bag says, plase do step forward!
