Earlier last week, I received a parcel from my “BFF”. She had already told me to keep the 22nd free a while ago, and the parcel was to contain some clues pertaining to our activity that night.
Well, to my surprise and utter delight, it yielded the following items:
One of my happiest childhood memories is watching Monty Python’s Life of Brian with my Dad. Sometimes I wonder whether he still finds that movie as funny as he did back then, because he has taken a turn towards the conservative side of religion. But I digress. I have been loving Monty Python ever since, and when I went on my New York vacation in 2005, I really wanted to see Spamalot, which is their Broadway musical. Alas, it was sold out. The same applied during to my visits to London. I was starting to believe that I just wasn’t meant to see it.
Until I heard that it would start running at Cologne’s Musical Dome. I must have expressed my wish to see this in passing (I can’t remember mentioning it) which she picked up on. And so, the mysterious parcel contained Monty Python’s Holy Grail and a tin of Spam, accompanied by a letter telling me not to worry, because the breakfast was 100% vegetarian. I am still blown away by the fact that she went through all the trouble of removing the tin’s contents, putting the ticket in, and sealing it! Awesome!
The musical was fantastic, too. I was a bit apprehensive about the German version, but I thought they did a great job. The acting and singing was thorougly enjoyable, too. Bear in mind that this is coming from someone who hates the Andrew Lloyd Webber variety of musicals, in fact The Who’s Tommy was the only musical I really enjoyed until now. It is unconventional and weird – if you find these features as appealing as I do, then this is a must-see.
My brother always sends me these really cute text messages with Emoji from his iPhone. Unfortunately, like any other iPhone user outside of Japan, Apple deprives me of reciprocating. This has irked me in the past because an Emoji somewhat enriches a rather bland medium. By jailbreaking the iPhone or using a vCard-export, they can be enabled on all iPhones, but I do not wish to jailbreak mine, and the vCard-feature is a bit tedious.
Well, I’d again like to thank my brother for providing me with the link to this blog article by iJustine. She mentions that by installing a Taiwanese RSS reader, the Emoji feature can be unlocked. I played around a little with it this morning and noticed that others were having a little more trouble than myself with their attempts, so I thought I’d post a step-by-step tutorial of how I managed. Gave me something to do during my sick leave.
NB: You (and the recipient) will need firmware 2.2 for this to work on your iPhone or iPod touch.
At the time of writing, this trick cannot be performed on firmware 2.2.1 yet.
1. Buy an app called FrostyPlace from iTunes. Yes, BUY. It’s $0.99 or €0.79. I expect this little obscurity to make it into the Top 25 of paid apps fairly soon. I bet the developers can’t believe their luck at this point.

I have a pretty nasty head cold and don’t feel so hot right now, but the latest episode still made me laugh out loud a lot. I just love, love, LOVE this show. It’s funnier than anything that you will find on TV, and they always have the best guests and music recommendations. I think I actually shrieked when I saw that Uh Huh Her were back, but I will obviously blame that on my congested nose and/or throat. Make sure you watch the clip till the very end (as is advisable with most of the shows to date) – for your eyes will behold the most loveliest of lovely and divine finger babies.
Tonight’sNext week’s episode of The L Word will include a cast addition whom I happen to be very excited about: Mei Melançon!
A couple of years ago, a friend dragged me along to see X-Men 3 and I won’t lie – I hated that film. I think I snoozed through most of it (don’t even remember Ellen Page being in it at all) and then awoke with a jolt because Psylocke appeared on the silver screen. While I’m a sucker for heroines or strong female characters in comic books, I never quite warmed to Psylocke because she always looked too much like a product of (predominantly male) erotic fantasies. In a nutshell, she was sexy rather than a true super hero. The movie version of Psylocke was everything I had always wanted her to be though: cool, tough and beautiful – sadly, she only had a really short stint on screen.
I was impressed enough to look up the actress who portrayed her on imdb.com upon my return home. I also remember being a little surprised by the terrible oversight of casting directors who up until then had only cast her in nondescript roles with colourful names such as, “Screaming Woman”, “Convenience Store Customer”, “Chinese Slavewhore” (horrible!), “Beautiful Patron” (improving), “Girl in Car” or “La Perla Model” (LOL).
When I was checking out trailers for season 6 of The L Word on YouTube, I stumbled across this one, and lo and behold, instant recognition: Mei Melançon is going to be on the show!

I have a sneaking suspicion that her character, Jamie Chen, might not be the most popular one due to possibly meddling with a beloved couple, but we’ll have to wait and see. I can’t wait!
Edited to add: According to imdb.com, Jamie Chen should have been introduced in the episode that aired last night, so I don’t know what happened.
And please stop sending me emails asking for verification regarding rumours about her dating life. How am I supposed to know?? I don’t know anything, I’ve only heard the same rumours that you have.
I will say this, though: I resent the fact that some of you sound so angry. I think Mei appears to be an intelligent, interesting, beautiful and down-to-earth woman, who would be a great match to the person she is rumoured to be with. They should both be considered lucky and I would be happy for them. And that is all I have got to say on this matter.

My first Mac. Thankfully, I have managed to shed my affinity for cluttered desks since.
I’ve been a fangirl since 1991, when I got my first Mac, the Performa 200, also known as Macintosh Classic II. No, actually it was in 1990 when I first used the SE/30 in school (programming in HyperTalk – those were the days, my friends!), but it took one year of badgering my parents until I got one for my birthday and Christmas – and everyone in my family chipped in. Best birthday/Xmas ever!
I take pride in the fact that I’ve been an early adopter and six Macs plus several gadgets later, I can’t wait to see what the next 25 years will hold for Apple! Have a good one, you Cupertino guys. And get well soon, Steve Jobs!
According to my iTunes, the Showtime podcast for “The L Word” had been updated. While I was a bit chuffed to see that the latest podcast was supposed to be running 54 minutes and 39 seconds, I thought that it might be some sort of cast commentary on the beginning of the end, i.e. Episode 1 of Season 6 – also known as the final season. Not to me though, I am still in denial about the finality of it all.
Well, to my suprise and delight this mega download turns out to be no podcast, but the – slightly edited – episode itself!
Get it here:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?i=48859755&id=111640387
(Link is for the US Store, but it should also be available in other regional stores. Please note that you will need iTunes to download and watch it.)
On a personal note, I hope that the HD version will be made available for purchase on iTunes after the episode has officially aired.
To those of you who have seen the episode: Got any thoughts to share?

I can haz emoji? Come on Apple, European iPhone users want ‘em, too!

Damn, this is gorgeous. I’d better start saving up!

There’s a bit of a strong resemblance, font-wise, isn’t there?
