Gossip and OTHERS live at Glastonbury

You can watch the full set here:
BBC – Glastobury 2008 – The Gossip

For some reason, I can’t watch the full set because the stream keeps breaking off, but it looks like they have a new member, and I almost didn’t recognize Hannah!

Edited to add:
I’m such a dork, I just realized that a whole bunch of live sets by other artists are up on that website, too – such as Lupe Fiasco, Jay-Z, Martha Wainwright and literally DOZENS of other great acts. I know how I’m going to be spending my next couple of nights!

Oh yeah, and any music journalist who says that Rock am Ring/Rock im Park is Europe’s most relevant music festival is clearly an idiot. I think this year Glastonbury has proven that it is the very zenith of the world’s best music festivals.

Redcar

Disambiguation: This post refers to a band, not the town in North Yorkshire, England (the county I once called home).

Redcar is one of these bands I have been meaning to check out for ages. Their lead singer Heather Grody was an original member of The Murmurs, a band I used to like a lot. Unfortunately they split up and later reformed as Gush, but somehow I was past caring at that point and never even got my hands on their CD (which is quite rare anyway, or so I’m told). Another member of The Murmurs/Gush joined this tv show called “The L Word” and recently co-founded a band called Uh Huh Her. So we all know what she’s been up to, but what about Heather Grody? When I googled her a while ago, I learned that she’s a member of Jorja Fox’s Honeypot Productions, which made me snicker. I swear I’m going to start a “Six Degrees of Ilene Chaiken”-chart one day, and I claim intellectual property on the title ;) But music-wise, I couldn’t find any info. A couple of months ago I was perusing the Uh Huh Her-forum while *cough*at work*cough*, and a member uttered her astonishment about the lack of conversation about Heather Grody’s new band called Redcar. “What?”, I silently exclaimed. “A new band and I have never heard of them?” I swore to myself that listening to them on MySpace would be the first thing I would do when getting home that night. And I forgot.

While I was watching the desaster that was last night’s football match and listing items on eBay, I was also listening to the earphoria podcast in which Brandi Carlile, the Indigo Girls and a bunch of artists I had never heard (but Katie Todd and I would be a musical match made in heaven) talk about bands they like and there was Brandi Carlile talking about The Murmurs and Redcar! I stopped in my multi-tasking tracks and headed over to Redcar’s MySpace. They are absolutely wonderful – one of these rare bands that seem to strike every single chord with me. I simply must have their album. Unfortunately it’s a little hard to get here in Europe, but I will order it from Amazon USA when I get back home later tonight. And this time, I certainly won’t forget.

Here’s the music video for their first single, “Can’t Be Stopped”:

Heaven Is a Piece of Cake

If you’re ever in Düsseldorf, try the Green Tea Loaf Cake from the “My Heart” bakery in the Japanese district – it’s to die for.

Japanese Green Tea Loaf Cake

And once you’re there, why not have the Gyoza menu at Don’s (Immermannstraße/corner Kreuzstraße) and then this melon ice cream from one of the Asian supermarkets for dessert? I’m almost glad I don’t live in Düsseldorf – I’d spend all my time eating and then end up with a serious weight problem!

Spymac

As of last night, all the files hosted on Spymac’s server are no longer available. This includes videos, larger image files and a couple of live versions. Spymac used to be a great community for Mac enthusiasts that I was active in a long time ago, but went downhill very fast when the owners got a little too ambitious. I refrained from bitching about it because of the Spydisk, one gigabyte of free webspace which this site has benefitted from. Unfortunately the service was terminated, and now I’ve got to start looking for something new. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Am I a Ghost to You?

It was my dad’s birthday on Monday. My brother and I got a little drunk and ended up taking long exposure shots on the street in what was essentially the middle of the night. This is me putting on my favourite hoody’s… hood. Why I decided to bow down for that – I don’t know.

Ghosts

And this is my brother dressed up as a Cowboy (at least until he makes me remove the picture ;-) ). How I managed to get the white balance on his shirt right, yet pull the focus on the background – I don’t know either.
As predicted, he asked me to take down the picture – and he’s got blackmail material now, so I’d better comply :-P

Indeed, it is not

See Tickets

I received my ticket for Brandi Carlile’s London gig on Friday. One hour later I received an email from See Tickets telling me that they had made a mistake which resulted in the tickets being invalid. It also told me to return the ticket by registered mail along with a print-out of the email so they could send me the correct ticket. Just great. And, to make things even greater, it didn’t sound like there was going to be a refund for the postage. Thanks, See Tickets. First and last time I’m buying from you!

So, this was the prettiest and most invalid ticket I have ever owned. ;)

If you watch just one episode of "This Just Out"…

then let it be the season finale:

Video from AfterEllen.com

I was hesitant to post about Liz Feldman again at first because I thought I would come across as a bit obsessed, but then my friend pointed me towards an entire blog dedicated to an actress in a very stalkerish way, so I think I’m good to go – for now.

Last night marked the season finale of “This Just Out with Liz Feldman”, and they really were pulling out all the stops for a video blog: A guest appearance (as predicted) by Uh Huh Her, who also performed a gorgeous acoustic version of “Wait Another Day”, a theme song for “This Just Out”, alternative band names for Uh Huh Her because there’s no way of saying the name and looking attractive (“Oui Oui She” and “Oy Oy Lady” were my favourites), an appropriate rendition of the “The L Word”-theme song, and cameos by Nicol Paone, Clea DuVall and Katherine Moennig. Who also was the guest on the very first show, in which Liz repeatedly called her Shane and generally mistook her for her TV show persona. You see, her shtick is to make the interviews as uncomfortable as possible for her guests. Of course most of her guests are her friends in real life and therefore in on the joke, but it’s still hilarious to witness, especially when she starts hitting on them. The show with Kate Moennig also sprung this very entertaining piece of dialogue:

LF: I drew a picture of this v-hole earlier in the show. Would you sign this for my mother, ’cause she has the hots for you.

KM: (laughs) What is that?

LF: Doesn’t matter, just sign it.

KM: (to camera) Can you show?

LF: No I can’t show. Look at that. You know what that is, I know you do. I know you know what that is.

KM: I think you should show it to the viewers.

LF: Can you sign this for my mother?

KM: What’s you… alright. What’s your mum’s name?

LF: Errr…… Liz.

KM: (laughs) Liz? Oh really?

LF: I am named after her.

KM: Ok. (signs)

LF: Ok, and can you sign this one for my grandmother, because she wants to **** you. (hands her another piece of paper)

KM: (laughing/crying) You’re crazy, there’s no way!

LF: No way?

KM: Your grandmother?

LF: Yes, she’s a top.

KM: (laughing out loud) Why thank goodness. Ok. (signs)

Watch the entire episode here.

I also love this show because of Raimy Rosenduft, who is as gorgeous as her surname suggests. I am so grateful to her because she has a spot on the show where she talks about bands she likes. One week she mentioned The Jealous Girlfriends among Hercules and Love Affair (“pick a title and roll with it”, says Liz) and Santogold. I do like the latter two but I had never heard of the first band, so I checked them out and I can’t believe I managed to miss them all this time! One of their songs was featured on The L Word and they also won first place for the iPod Music Video Contest with their music video for “How Now”. Needless to say, I do think they’re really really good. Their lead singer also recorded a pretty decent cover version of The Smiths’ “Please Please Please”, you can find it here, along with the L Word-song.

On a sidenote, how come they didn’t have this sword when I went to Disneyworld?

Tomorrow

Tomorrow marks one of the very rare Mondays that I am actually looking forward to – for two reasons:

1) Apple’s WWDC. But you may have gotten the idea.
2) Uh Huh Her are going to be on “This Just Out with Liz Feldman”! At least I’m pretty sure they are. The given clue was “Yep It’s She. (And no, it’s not Ellen!)”. To which a few of the not-so-bright readers at AfterEllen.com replied “OMG! Could it be Ellen?”. No, it can’t be. It says so right in the clue! What I found even more embarrassing were those who said “OMG Leisha Hailey!” or, worse even, “OMG Alice!”. No, it’s not just Leisha Hailey, you ignoramuses (love that word, always picture Dame Edna saying it). Uh Huh Her consists of two equally talented and lovely ladies, one of which happens to be on The L Word. Uh Huh Her isn’t her band, she is one half of that band. Heck, she isn’t even the lead singer – her name would be Camila Grey. *takes a deep breath* Ok, glad I could clear things up!
