Killers win VMA and look goofy
Haha!

Now I was going to post some thoughts, but Stereogum’s entry, captions and comments are so much funnier than anything that I could have come up with, so just some random observations:

The Killers at least won one award, yay. However, I think I don’t “get” Brandon – I mean, first of all, cleavage ya’ll – and seriously, my mother has a jacket like the one he was wearing. And what part exactly was supposed to be “history” about The Killers accepting an award from Snoop Dogg? Or was that a joke I didn’t get?

Their performace was pretty good, not mindblowing or anything, but it had some great moments. My favourite performance of the evening was Kanye West I think, the energy was brilliant. I had been looking forward to Coldplay, but thought that Chris Martin’s voice was a little disappointing that night. However, the VERY yummy bass player managed to save the performance with v. lovely backing vocals. And I’m not Bridget Jones.

I also have to confess that My Chemical Romance have somewhat become a guilty pleasure of mine. I know I know, I ain’t no teenie no mo’, but I do actually find “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge” to be a very entertaining album. Having said that, however debatable their music may be, “Helena” was a fantastic video, and they really would have deserved an award for that in my humble opinion. Actually I’m pretty annoyed they didn’t get a single one.

Their surprise performance sadly revealed one of their major weaknesses – their lead singer, Gerard Way, unfortunately does not sing live very well. You can tell he wants to do well, but it simply doesn’t work out, and that is kinda sad to watch. Ah well, their show was great nevertheless, and let’s admit it, he is very handsome, so one can be forgiving about small potatoes such as a singer’s voice here *laughs*.

Do I embarrass myself further and slag off the horrible horrible outfits that some of the ladies were wearing that night? Such as Kirsten Dunst (oh.my.god), Jessica Simpson (WTF!!!!!!!!), Eva Longoria (Eh?), Fergie BEP (???) and Kelly Clarkson’s outfit for the finale? No, I don’t think I will do that. At least there were plenty of well-dressed men that night.

I would like to focus my entire evil energy on R Kelly, but words fail me here, they really do. I was so embarrassed by his atrocious performance that I was literally shuffling uncomfortably in my chair. First of all this over-the-top, whacked-out story, and then the worst lip-synching I have ever seen. It was so bad that I’m starting to think that this was some kind of last minute substitute act, this couldn’t possibly have been a rehearsed performance!

Some closing thoughts on this year’s festivities:

Hahahaha, no award for Eminem. Diddy is the epitomy of megalomania. Ricky Martin is looking gayer by the year. Ciara always looks like she forgot to pull down her top. Alicia Keys is divine. How old is Kelly Clarkson? My guess would be about 17. I will try to not watch it again next year.

I hear them scream on the radio

Starsailor logo

Ever since Torr posted the link to the Lamacq Live show which aired the new Starsailor single for the first time, I have been listening to that song almost non-stop. I first kept skipping to the 1:10:47-mark of the show (I have been meaning to listen to Lamacq Live every day but then I never do and watch bad telly instead) where the song starts on my version, and then I got really sick of that and just recorded it off the stream. The quality is crap and obviously I will be the first in line to buy the album on the day it is released anyway. I literally did that with both “Love Is Here” and “Silence Is Easy”, so why not do it again. When you’re pathetic then at least make a habit out of it!

Starsailor singer James Walsh has told nme.com: “With this album there?s elements of the first two albums. We?ve been trying to make sure the music?s unrestrained, but it was important to get the lyrics right on this one too.

I was getting there on the second album (?Silence Is Easy?). I wanted to make sure all the songs had cohesion and that the album had something to say as well as being great for people to listen to.?

Now I know this will make many people cringe, but as far as I’m concerned, lyrics are secondary. When it comes to music, I primarily care about tunes. I turn to books for wordsmiths. If a song sounds great AND has interesting lyrics, then that’s dapper. If it sounds great but the lyrics are trite… well then I don’t really care either.

Therefore, I absolutely loved “Love Is Here”. The lyrics were ok, but often I would just try to blend out lines such as the frequently-quoted “Way To Fall”. As far as I’m concerned, that was one hell of a fantastic album. I didn’t dislike “Silence Is Easy” as much as most other people seemed to. Sure, it took me several tries to take it apart, to find the great and not-so-great-bits. I did find more things that I liked than things I disliked. However, it did in fact put more emphasis on the lyrics, and music-wise there was a price to pay for that as the abum was a lot more low-key than its predecessor, which I regretted.

So when I read James Walsh’s announcement concerning the next album, I thought “uh-oh, not again.” But I needn’t have worried, because “In The Crossfire” ‘rawks’ – well as much as Starsailor ever rock. I tried to transcribe the lyrics, but since my copy of the song bears a strong resemblance to a white noise broadcast played through a tin can and I am not a native speaker of English, I may have gotten them wrong. I am especially uncertain about the bridge, i.e. the part in between the asterisks, but what should get clear is that while the lyrics are certainly interesting, they aren’t exactly deep deep stuff, either. I do like the “I don’t see myself when I look at the flag, Thank god for that”-bit, but apart from that… well, we’ll have to wait for the “On The Outside” album, released October 17, to see whether there is cohesion. And I simply can’t believe that I have to wait October 3 until I can buy the song. I mean seriously, 5 weeks to go just until we can buy the single?! Starsailor.net mentions a pre-sale, so at least there’s some hope there – thank god for that ;)

Starsailor.net also reports that “Starsailor will be celebrating the launch of their new single, In The Crossfire by performing four small shows:

3rd October Bristol Bierkeller
4th October Manchester Jabez Clegg
6th October Birmingham Irish Centre
7th October Edinburgh The Venue

Four similar shows will be taking place in Europe and will be announced shortly.”

It would be great if they played one show in the Cologne area since they have a strong fan-base here. However, seeing that there will only be four shows in Europe they’ll probably either skip Germany entirely or play in Berlin or Munich. Ah well, time will tell!

Lyrics: Starsailor – In The Crossfire

I don’t see myself when I look in the mirror
I see who I should be
I don’t see myself when I look in your eyes
Thank god for that

I don’t see myself when I look across the river
I see where I should be
I don’t see myself when I look from the sky
Thank god for that

I hear them scream on the radio
It’s getting louder in the crossfire
Try to find some hope
From the ashes of their broken home

I don’t see myself when they fail to deliver
I see what I should be
I don’t see myself when I look at the flag
Thank god for that

I hear them scream on the radio
It’s getting louder in the crossfire
Try to find some hope

***
Our day will come
We’ll find the sun
We’ll find the fire
We’ll sanctify
The love we gave
Our one desire
***

I hear them scream on the radio
It’s getting louder in the crossfire
Try to find some hope

I hear them scream on the radio
It’s getting louder in the crossfire
Try to find some hope
From the ashes of their broken home

I don’t see myself when I look in the mirror

Software Recommendation

Clutter app

Since my life is pretty uneventful and boring at the moment, I would like to recommend this excellent piece of freeware.

From the creators’ website (emphasis mine):

Clutter is a small Mac OS X application that lets you put music CDs on your desktop. You can drag them anywhere — they’re really windows. Line them up neatly or put them in piles, it’s your choice. Each one looks like the real CD’s cover, and double-clicking it tells iTunes — or your SqueezeBox or SoundBridge — to play that CD.

Think of Clutter as an alternate user interface to your music collection. When deciding what to play next, instead of searching through a huge alphabetical list, let your eye roam over the covers of your favorite CDs and those you’ve been listening to recently.

There’s a main window that shows the CD you’re now playing — the cover picture is looked up automatically from Amazon.com or from iTunes 4, or you can paste in your own. (You can also export pictures to iTunes 4.) To keep a CD around for easy access, just drag the picture out of the window onto your desktop. Then double-click it whenever you want to play it.

I totally love it, I have been looking for something that automatically looks up artwork for iTunes for ages, and this application both does a great job and looks very cool – it’s almost like dealing with actual CDs.

Zoo Station

Duisburg Zoo

It was my friend M’s birthday last week, and she wanted us to visit her on Saturday because she’s away for something like summer school in the town of Duisburg. Wouldn’t have been a problem, but Saturday pretty much was the peak of the World Youth Day, when thousands of pilgrims were flocking to the “Marienfeld”, and most of them had to go via Cologne Central Station to get there – a station which we too had to pass.

I got up very early just so I could make it to our meeting point in time. Still there were a couple of moments when I thought I couldn’t make it. I won’t bore you with details here, but it was just crazy, I hope that I won’t have to encounter herds of people and tense situations like that ever again in my life.

Surprisingly, our train to Duisburg departed on time, however it went kind of slow and made long stops at every station on the way because they were all swamped with pilgrims and the train driver had to make sure that the platforms were clear, so we arrived at Duisburg Central Station about 30 minutes late. We found M right away and Duisburg seemd to be pilgrim-free – nice! We then took the tram, the weirdest tram I have ever seen, to the zoo, which is Duisburg’s biggest tourist attraction.

I’m not a huge fan of zoos, and I was once again reminded why. I felt incredibly sorry for most of the animals there, and it depressed me a lot to see them like that. The fossa stands out, an animal which was portrayed as the “baddie” in the recent Dreamworks flick “Madagascar”, but which in reality is an incredibly beautiful and dignified aninmal. Its natural habitat is solely on the island of Madagascar, and it’s pretty obvious that the German climate is pretty different from that. They had two fossas at the Duisburg Zoo, but they were kept seperated from each other – for a reason, I assume. What I found exorbitant, however, was the fact that they were kept in shady cages that were hardly larger than six by eight foot each. They both appeared to be seriously disturbed, both were just running in circles along one of the walls, and by the traces on the floor one could tell that they haven’t been doing much else lately. And even though it may sound pathetic, I will never forget the eyes of one of the fossas, for they were the saddest eyes I have ever seen, anywhere. I think I will write an email to the zoo complaining about their ill treatmeant of these animals. They probably won’t give a toss, but I feel like I have to do at least something.

I did enjoy the zebras and the fish, which looked relatively happy to me. Of course my camera’s battery was empty so I had to take most pictures with my mobile phone, which doesn’t have flash, so I couldn’t take any pics of the fossas.

A zebra (I really should get a new digital camera with better zoom one day):

The way home was…. eventful. I was so exhausted and was kinda glad that Cologne Central was almost deserted compared to earlier on – the majority of the pilgrims was already at the Marienfeld by then. I still ended up on a train full of ‘em, with a lady with very bad breath and mad bible rantings talking to me incessantly. I am not, despite all, a bad person, and I’m usually very polite, but she was a tough case I just didn’t want to put up with in the state of mind. So I pulled out my iPod, blasted up the volume, and started reading in a book. Ah, much better. Eventually she got the idea and started looking for another victim, a young couple who seemed interested in what she had to say. Good for them.

I then ended up being stranded two stops before my own, and the whole town was locked because of the Pope being there, so I couldn’t get out, nor could I get someone to pick me up. I was tired and exhausted, but a lovely man from Turkey who had a fast food stall next to the train station saw how unhappy I was, and told me I could get any drink or meal from his stall, and it would be on the house. I just wanted a water, but still, it was so nice of him. Well I did get home eventually, but it was so late that I thought I’d watch some TV upon arriving home, and promptly fell asleep on the bed. In fact I have spent most of today sleeping as well, last week was tough in many ways, so I feel like my batteries are now recharged, and I’m ready for yet another week.

Another new live Killers track

Ok it’s official, I’m more looking forward to the new Killers album, which they haven’t even started recording yet, than I am to my birthday and any random religious holiday combined. In fact, I think I want it more than I used to want summer holidays when I was a kid, and everyone who knows me knows that I loved summer holidays. I still do, but of course I don’t get ‘em anymore!

Any chance of future happiness therefore lies in the advent of the new Killers album. This song is called “Where Is She”. It may be based on a true story, there has been some controversy over that and even talk that it might not make it to the album because of it. So listen to the fabulous live version while it’s still hot.

Where Is She

Apple iBook sale leaves 17 injured

Ok I always knew that Macs were special, but these people were taking them way too seriously! Spiegel Online reports that at least 17 were hurt during a special sale of four-year-old iBooks formerly used in high schools in Richmond, Virgina – they went for $50 rather than the $999 or $1299 they once may have cost. Apparently thousands of people showed up and panic broke out. One guy even tried to get through with his car. Tsk tsk tsk.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the iBook way more expensive than that four years ago? I think they just looked up the current price of the iBook, which is the lazy thing to do. Technically, the four-year-old iBook probably isn’t worth more than the 50 bucks they were asking for. But the lucky guys who got one admidst the craziness are lucky indeed, because as far as I’m concerned they got one of the nicest laptops ever made for a bargain price. So I really can’t blame them for showing up. But fight and hurt others just to make a bargain? Geez, I always thought this was something that only Germans are capable of!

Sin City

Sin City

FINALLY this film opened here last Thursday, and FINALLY I got so see it tonight. It was everything I expected it to be, and even more. I’ve only read some of the Sin City comics, and only once – yet I could see the drawings while watching the film, and I totally loved that. Everything worth mentioning about the film has already been mentioned, so I will just list some random things that in one way or the other mattered to me. It WAS dark, but as far as I’m concerned, it could have been darker. I loved Clive Owen in this. I never really cared for him and haven’t even seen “Closer” yet. But from the first time I saw him, this evil voice in my head said, “Well, hellloooooo” – and it wouldn’t stop. Black and white just worked very well for his features, and I don’t know why because even though his charater was one of the more sketchy ones, I still found him utterly convincing. His scenes with Rosario Dawson were sizzling (I always see and hear guy with the big glasses from the VH-1 “Top 100″ series say that. I know I will have to look up his name eventually because I’m thinking “sizzling” quite often and therefore he is on my mind a lot, LOL).

Dwight

Most un-sizzling person? The yellow guy, followed closely by Brittany Murphy. Boy can she not act. I think I would have casted Chloe Sevigny for the role – but then again, I would cast her for many roles where starlets fail. Jessica Alba on the other hand was fabulous. Why did have Rory have to be in this?! I hate Rory. I would like Gilmore Girls so much more if it was just about Lorelai. I know I’m being irrational and that it wasn’t Rory but rather Alexis whatsername, but as soon as I hear that voice, I’m thinking Rory. So that did not work out well for me. When she met “The Man”, I was snickering with glee, couldn’t help it.

Also loved Bruce Willis, he seems to have found a spot in my lil’ heart, or rather he crept in because I really don’t have a clue why I suddenly like him in films. Ah well, could be worse. As long as it’s not Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson I’m not concerned – and the day I like either is the day hell freezes over.

Ok I COULD go into a long rant about Mel Gibson, The Passion of the Christ, the World Youth Days or “Weltjugendtag” (how ironic, since it’s not just one day but more than a week!) that is going on here. But I shall refrain. Instead I give this film about sin and sinners a full five-star-review, because I loved every second of it.

All the Pretty Faces

I don’t know why exactly, since I have been listening to lots of other stuff for the last couple of days, but I have been in love with “All the Pretty Faces”, a new song by The Killers which they’ve been playing live recently, all day today. It makes me even more excited about the new album than I already am, because if this an indicator of the quality to be found, then they’ll get even bigger than they already are. And rightly so!

I’m not sure about the lyrics though – I mean, Brandon sings the f-word! Which may sound like I’m having a problem with that, which, let’s be honest here, I totally don’t. I’m probably the first to swear. If “fuck” existed in my mother tongue, I would generously apply it to every tiny opportunity. It’s just that Brandon uttering the f-word is almost like hearing your own mother swear (which in my case hasn’t happened yet!). I’m starting to think that maybe one of the other guys wrote the lyrics on that one, LOL. I love ‘em though (I think I’m going through my “enthusiastic” phase right now, I hardly recognise myself any more. Where are the rants?!) – slightly dark and twisted (ok that sounds more like it), and the guitar arrangements even on the live version are something else.
